| Description: | This twelve hour experience deals with the somatovisceral aspects of spinal trauma well outside the sprain/strain "box". The concept of trauma is broadened well beyond the narrow territory of auto accidents, work injuries, etc. Finally, Dr. Masarsky won't just discuss how the adjustment helps the body recover from trauma, but also how the adjustment may prevent future trauma. Course participants will be given practical tools for clinical assessment and patient education backed up by solid science. Course Objectives: Courses on spinal trauma generally focus on the musculoskeletal consequences of obvious macro-trauma. This course will add to the practitioner’s knowledge base with a discussion of the autonomic aspects of non-obvious cumulative micro-trauma. Practical aspects of this material will be discussed, particularly in terms of clinical assessment and patient education. Statement of Purpose: Recent research developments have clarified our understanding of spinal trauma beyond the obvious musculoskeletal aspects of sprain and strain. The rationale of this course is to update the clinician on these important developments within the traditional clinical logic of chiropractic. Overview of Course: Coughing, sneezing, and low frequency vibration will be discussed, along with other sources of cumulative micro-trauma. Following a brief review of the clinical neuroanatomy of the ANS, the impact of spinal trauma on the special senses, the immune system, and the central nervous system will be explored via the basic and clinical science literature. Insights for clinical assessment and ethical patient education will be gleaned from this material. Since 1991, Dr. Masarsky has lectured on the somatovisceral aspects of chiropractic in Europe, Australia, Canada, and fourteen of the United States. With his wife and partner, Marion Todres, D.C., he co-edited the textbook, Somatovisceral Aspects of Chiropractic: An Evidence-Based Approach. They have been in private practice in Vienna, VA (in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC) since 1983. Dr. Masarsky's patient education articles are available in his "Evidence-Based Educator" column in Dynamic Chiropractic. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

The system allows for relative motion between the tissues and articulations. Evaluation and treatment occur simultaneously. The course emphasizes the manipulation of the neuromusculoskelatal system to diagnose and correct alterations in tissue texture, tension, movement, and function. All treatment protocols are designed to correct these alterations, assist in making articular adjustments easier to accomplish, and to shorten the treatment regimen required to resolve a case. In this way, it follows traditional chiropractic paradigms and methods. Introductory courses are currently being taught in five chiropractic colleges. |

In addition, implementation of the most common outcome assessments will be discussed. Aspects of clinical documentation explored will include; how to perform a thorough examination with the associated documentation, accurate patient diagnoses and outcome assessment implementation. Instructional emphasis will be placed on providing precise, practical and implementable material to enhance and protect the physician while bringing each aspect of the physician’s procedures into compliance. Cases in point from the instructors’ clinical and consulting experience will be provided to facilitate the physician’s understanding of both the benefits and consequences of their examination and diagnosing practices. Upon completion of the class, each physician will take-away knowledge of the contents of a thorough examination and appropriate diagnoses (with objective support) for their personal injury patients. In addition, action steps and ideas for correction and improvement will be provided while reinforcing the physician’s current strengths. Course Objectives: 1. Improve the physician’s knowledge of the initial examination procedures and diagnosing practices and principles through detailed instruction of each aspect. 2. Instruct the physician to identify the common pitfalls of incomplete examination and inappropriate diagnoses detailed in the class outline. This is followed by instruction in avoidance and compliance practices. 3. Assist the physician in the implementation of the most common outcome assessments into their practices and to understand their clinical significance. |
